An investigation is underway, after a man was hit and killed by an Amtrak train in Santa Barbara.

Police say it happened just before 5:30 p.m. Wednesday near the train station at the corner of State and East Yanonali Streets in Santa Barbara.

Officers say the man walked under the downed railroad gates as the train approached. Witnesses say the conductor sounded the train's whistle, but the man was looking the other way, toward the station.

He died at the scene. His name has not been released.
