SAN CLEMENTE, Calif. (AP) - Authorities say a man who stepped on beachfront railroad tracks in Orange County has been killed by an Amtrak passenger train that runs along the California coast.
The Sheriff's Department says the 54-year-old man was killed by the Pacific Surfliner in San Clemente at about 4:30 p.m. on Monday.
He was declared dead at the scene.
Witnesses told sheriff's investigators the man walked on to the tracks, but they could not tell whether he did so intentionally.
The tracks were closed for several hours, and passengers from Metrolink commuter trains, which also use the tracks, were put on busses to bridge the gap between trains.
