The Santa Barbara Police Department says it arrested a Fresno man Monday after he stole a car in Fresno to drive to Santa Barbara to pick up his girlfriend from jail.
Officers say two detectives were driving near the Ralph's Supermarket in the 100 block of West Carillo Street when they spotted a gold colored 2000 Honda Civic with front end damage. Suspicious, the detectives ran the plate and it returned as a vehicle reported stolen out of Fresno Sunday. A man and his girlfriend got out of the car and went into Ralph's, where they were arrested without incident. The man had an altered key that fit the Honda in his pocket.
Officers say Steven Gene Romero, 28, stole the car so he could drive it to meet up with his girlfriend after she was released from Santa Barbara County Jail. Officers say there wasn't enough evidence to charge the woman in connection with the car theft so she was released.
Romero was booked into county jail on a charge of grand theft auto. He was also arrested on a $290,000 warrant for auto theft issued out of Fresno.
