Man who shot at deputies found dead in Kern County

LAMONT, Calif. (AP) - Kern County authorities say a man who shot at deputies and led officers on a manhunt has been found dead in a trailer.

Sheriff's spokesman Ray Pruitt says deputies found the man dead from a gunshot wound Thursday after deputies shot at the trailer in Lamont where he was hiding. They also found weapons in the trailer.

Pruitt says it's unclear whether deputies had killed the man or if he committed suicide. The suspect's name hasn't been released.

The incident began late Wednesday when a deputy attempted to pull over a driver who then fled from his car and fired at the deputy chasing him. The suspect fired at deputies on two other occasions.

School was cancelled and neighboring houses were evacuated.

Official say no deputies or bystanders were hurt.
