According to the Santa Barbara County Fire Department, 100 homes in the Painted Cave area are under mandatory evacuation orders as firefighters battle the Lookout Fire burning at the summit of Highway 154.

No homes have burned but homes are threatened. The Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Department is using its reverse 911 system to notify residents. Crews are also going door to door telling residents to leave. According to the Santa Barbara County Office of Emergency Management, the fire has burned about 15 acres and is spreading slowly.

In 1990, a devastating fire in the Painted Cave area destroyed more than 400 homes.
