Marian Regional Medical Center is now a Level III trauma center.
The Santa Barbara County Emergency Medical Services Agency granted the designation after an evaluation of the center in Santa Maria.
To be considered a Level III trauma center a hospital must be staffed and equipped with technology that can provide comprehensive life-saving care.
Dave Ketelaar, co-medical director of the Emergency Department told KSBY News, "We have the support of administration to make sure we have all the structures and processes in place to do the entire continuum of trauma care. From when they hit the emergency department doors until they leave the hospital and beyond into rehab."
Level III centers also have agreements set up with other hospitals to take in patients with exceptionally severe injuries.
