Martinez goal in sudden death sends Righetti into CIF final

Will Boerger was fouled inside the 5-meter box and Keanu Martinez buried the ensuing penalty shot to deliver a thrilling 19-18 win in sudden death overtime for the Righetti High boys water polo team to move on to the CIF Division Finals.

Martinez scored the game-tying goal with one second left on the clock in overtime to send the semifinal to the sudden-death period.

The Warriors play Los Osos, which beat Arroyo Grande 13-5, in Saturday's championship game at the William Woollett Aquatic Center in Irvine. The game time is set for 1:30 pm, but is subject to change.

The Warriors advanced to their first final since 2006 and are seeking their first title since 2002.

Martinez led Righetti with 7 goals, while Travis Knight and Devon Tomooka each scored 4 times for the now 26-6 Warriors.

Goalie Nathan Oh recorded 10 saves.

The semifinal with Cerritos was a back-and-forth battle. The top seeded Warriors led 9-8 at halftime. But the game was tied 4-4 after the first quarter, 10-10 after three and 14-14 after regulation.
