Cal Poly second baseman and Big West Field Player of the Year Mark Mathias earned a spot on the official 24-man roster for USA Baseball's Collegiate National Team which was announced on Monday.
Mathias' selection marks the second year in a row, and the third time ever, that the Mustangs will be represented on Team USA. Last summer pitcher Matt Imhof, now a member of the Philadelphia Phillies organization, represented the red, white and blue against teams from all over the world. Ozzie Smith did the same in 1976.
The Collegiate National Team is based in Cary, N.C. and play through July, mostly in North Carolina. The team will also make stops in Virginia, the Netherlands and Cuba this season.
Prior to competing for a roster spot on this year's team, Mathias hit a Big West-leading .386 and the sophomore earned All-Regional honors after going 7 for 14 with three RBI in June.
Pitcher Dillon Tate will join Mathias and represent UC Santa Barbara on Team USA. Tate posted a 1.45 ERA for the Gauchos this past season. Also from the Big West, Cal State Fullerton's Thomas Eshelman and Justin Garza made the final roster.
