SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - Two Central Coast baseball players will be competing for spots on the Team USA Collegiate National Squad
Big West Conference Field Player of the Year Mark Mathias and standout closer Dillon Tate are both headed to Cary, N.C. Friday to tryout for the Team USA Collegiate National squad at the USA Baseball National Training Complex.
Mathias will compete for one of the 24 official roster spots after hitting .386 for Cal Poly during his sophomore season with 39 RBI, 14 doubles, one triple and two home runs. Mathias also led the Mustangs with 81 hits and had hit streaks of 17 and 14 games, respectively.
This is the second year in a row and fourth time in six seasons that a player from Cal Poly made it to the 33-man provisional roster.
UC Santa Barbara closer Tate will join Mathias in North Carolina after 28 appearances on the mound and pitching 43 1/3 innings, recording 12 saves and 46 strikeouts. Tate's 12 saves marks as the second-highest ever for the Gauchos and he was named as the Gauchos' Breakout Athlete of the Year. Tate was also honored on the All-Big West Second Team.
Cal State Fullerton' sThomas Eshelman is the third Big West player that will be at the USA Baseball National Training Complex when tryouts start on Friday.
