Mathis, Bendele named N.SB County Athletes of the Week

The Northern Santa Barbara County Athletic Roundtable saluted Orcutt Academy swimmer Emily Mathis and Righetti baseball player Ryan Bendele as its Female and Male Athletes of the Week on Monday in Orcutt.
Mathis, a sophomore, won the 500 yard freestyle and 100 breaststroke races during the Santa Barbara County Meet over the weekend. Mathis posted automatic qualifying times for the CIF-Southern Section Division 4 Preliminaries. She also performed the breaststroke in the 200 medley relay.
Mathis credited swimming next to close friends in both individual races for helping push her even more. "In the 100 free I swam next to one of the my good friends Maddie Diaz and I just think swimming next to people I know makes me go faster because you get really competitive," said Mathis.
Bendele went 7 for 12 at the plate with 10 RBI and 5 runs to help the Warriors take two out of three from previously undefeated Paso Robles. The three-year varsity player hit a game-tying grand slam and run-scoring single to help the Warriors win the opener 10-9 behind his 3 hits and 5 RBI. The following game, Bendele hit two doubles, one triple, drew two walks and drove in 5 more runs.
Bendele was not present to accept the award. His coach Brian Tomooka gave a glowing report when asked what this week's honoree means to the Warriors. "This year he's really turned the corner offensively for us. He's hitting with a lot more power. On the bases, he's probably got the best instincts on our team. He plays with a great deal of confidence and I think that carries over to the rest of the team," said Tomooka.
The Warriors are 7-5 in PAC-7 League play and in third place in the standings with six more league games to play.
