Morro Bay High graduate Matthew Hansen was eliminated from the 101st California Amateur Championship on Friday in the quarterfinals in heartbreaking fashion.
The UC Davis junior-to-be lost in 23 holes of match play to Ben Geyer of Arbuckle at La Cumbre Country Club in Santa Barbara.
Hansen took a 3 hole lead after the first four holes only to see Geyer take holes 6, 9 and 13 to tie the match. Hansen won the 15th and 16th holes to take a commanding 2 hole lead with two holes to play. However, Geyer birdied 17 and 18 to win both holes to force a tie. Hansen recorded 7 birdies in his first 18 holes.
Hansen, a Los Osos native, and Geyer tied the next four playoff holes. On their 23rd hole, Geyer carded a par on the 138 yard-par 3, while Hansen bogeyed to end the epic quarterfinal.
Geyer, who plays for St. Mary's University, advanced to play Santa Barbara native Jack Perry in the semifinals.
