A man is facing animal cruelty charges after Morro Bay police say he shot and killed one of his dogs after a fight Monday night.
Police responded to the 300 block of Java around 6:15 p.m. after receiving reports of shots fired near the area.
Police say two large dogs, owned by Stephen Griley, 60, got into a fight and when Griley and his adult daughter tried to separate the dogs, the daughter was bitten. She sustained minor injuries.
Police say after the animals were separated, Griley shot one of the dogs multiple times. It was dead when officers arrived. The other dog also had injuries, which officers say are believed to be from the fight.
Gun shot rounds were also found in and around other homes in the area.
Griley was booked into the San Luis Obispo County Jail on suspicion of animal cruelty, negligent discharge of a firearm, and possession of a large capacity magazine. Jail logs did not show him in custody Tuesday afternoon.
Police say the investigation is ongoing and there could be more charges filed or additional arrests made in the case.
Anyone with information is asked to call the Morro Bay Police Department.
