McDonald's hands out 2,000 free backpacks to local students

School is just around the corner, and all those school supplies can end up being costly, which is why several local McDonald's restaurants hosted a backpack giveaway Saturday.

The McDonald's in Santa Maria was one of just several local McDonald's that participated.

In all, McDonald's gave away 2,000 free backpacks to elementary and middle school students Saturday morning. Some of the restaurants even hosted a back to school fair.

On Sunday, United Way of San Luis Obispo is hosting its KidSpree event. 200 kids will get gift cards to spend on new school clothes.
