Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center received a Bronze Organ Donation Medal of Honor earlier this month from the United States Department of Health and Human Services.

Sierra Vista said it is one of 307 hospitals honored nationally and the only hospital on the Central Coast.

"These (honored) organizations have all made a real difference by working to increase the number of organs available for transplantation," said Mary K. Wakefield, Ph.D., RN, administrator of HHS' Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). "Together, they are helping to save and improve the lives of individuals across America."

Sierra Vista was recognized for achieving a 75 percent collaborative conversion rate in addition to achieving and sustaining national goals for donation.
