Medical marijuana dispensaries a hot topic in Guadalupe

The Guadalupe city council will hear from its residents tonight on the highly controversial topic of medical marijuana dispensaries. Currently, the city doesn't have a permanent ban on pot clinics. The city council issued a moratorium on those clinics in May of last year and extended it for another 10 months and 15 days. It is set to expire on May 8.
Under federal and state law, it is illegal to manufacture, distribute, dispense or possess marijuana, but California makes an exception for medical purposes with a doctor's prescription. Many Central Coast cities, including Santa Maria, Lompoc, Buellton, and Arroyo Grande have all passed ordinances against the clinics.
Santa Barbara County also has a moratorium on the dispensaries, which expires at the end of this year and is looking into a permanent ban as well.
Tonight's meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. inside the Guadalupe City Hall Council Chambers.
