Memorial held in Morro Bay for a young boy who drowned

Family, friends and a community came together Saturday in Morro Bay to remember a little boy who drowned.

It was standing room only in a sea of red at Del Mar Elementary as people paid tribute to 11-year-old Michael Gallegos.

Michael, known to everyone as Mikey was at a private party at the end of June, at Star Farms near Paso Robles. Mikey and all the kids were playing on a swimming deck in the pond when it overturned, and he didn't make it back to the shore. CPR was given but they couldn't resuscitate the young boy.

Saturday, in honor of Mikey everyone wore sports gear or red which was his favorite color. One of his coach's spoke at the service "he was such an awesome kid whenever I saw him he was always having fun and he was always kind to those around him."

The school and Morro Bay Community Foundation have set up funds in Mikey's name. Any donations will provide scholarships for other kids to play community sports.
