Family and friends said goodbye to Army Specialist Kenneth Alvarez on Thursday.
The 23-year-old was killed in Afghanistan on August 23rd when his unit was attacked.
His memorial service was held at St. Louis de Montfort church in Orcutt.
Kenny, as his family and friends called him, was born on March 28th, 1990 in Santa Maria.
His uncle, Leo Santos, says since he was a child, Kenny had a love for life.
"The kid had charisma like nobody's business and he knew it," he said.
Hundreds of Kenny's loved ones came to celebrate his life and to honor what he loved most.
"He loved taking baby Isaac to Pismo Beach, especially to eat at Splash Café. He took regular trips with Isaac to Toys 'R Us where they would shop for the latest toys," said Santos.
His uncle says he was deployed on his second tour this year.
He says Kenny had a strong sense of duty and courage.
"He could make life's challenges and difficulties seem effortless. Even a war," said Santos.
It was a tearful goodbye as his family, friends and Army brothers saluted him and honored his sacrifice.
Alvarez leaves behind a wife and his son, Isaac.
The family has set up a memorial fund called the Isaac Anthony Alvarez Trust Fund.
You can make a donation at Community Bank of Santa Maria at 1421 South Broadway in Santa Maria.
