Many women complain of memory problems as they go through menopause, and a new study reveals these cognitive issues are real, especially during the first year.

Researchers followed more than 100 women in different stages of menopause and evaluated their attention, memory and fine motor skills.

They found women in the early part of post-menopause performed worse on the tests than those in the later stages.

While it's not clear why memory problems are more prevalent during early menopause, experts say these issues are normal and temporary.

Sleep issues, depression and anxiety during menopause were not linked to memory problems.
