People on the Central Coast gathered Wednesday night to talk about mental illness.

A forum in Pismo Beach featured local novelist, Jay Asher. He wrote the best-seller "Thirteen Reasons Why" about a teenage girl who takes her own life.

The forum called "Journey of Hope" is a presentation designed to highlight suicide prevention and mental health recovery.

Erin Statham attended the forum. She told KBSY News, "I like to hear the experience and you know the hope of other people and what they've been through and how they've overcame their illness and how they've moved on, so it's really inspirational."

Local resources and mental health services from more than 30 agencies were there. The forum also featured a documentary about mental health created by Cal Poly students.
