Mexico frees ex-Marine jailed for bringing in gun

MIAMI (AP) - A Marine veteran jailed for months in Mexico after trying to carry a family heirloom shotgun across the border has been freed.

Patrick Ventrell, the acting deputy spokesman for the State Department, has confirmed Hammer's release and return to the U.S. He says "Officials from the U.S. Consulate General in Matamoros met him at the prison and escorted him to the U.S. border, where he was reunited with members of his family."

Jon Hammar (HAM'-ur) had been jailed since August after he and a friend tried to cross the border with the shotgun, which once belonged to his great-grandfather. Mexico rarely allows foreigners to bring firearms into the country.

Hammar's attorney says Mexican authorities determined there was no intent to commit a crime. Hammar did tours with the Marines in Iraq and Afghanistan. His parents live in South Florida.
