Minimum wage workers welcome pay increase

California's minimum wage workers got a raise on Tuesday. They're now making $9 an hour, an increase of one dollar.

Gov. Jerry Brown signed the increase into law last fall. It will boost the minimum wage another dollar to $10 an hour starting in 2016.

"Well, I believe it's very long overdue," said Lisa Leonard, Santa Maria resident. "And cost of living is so hard to survive daily, let alone not make enough money to pay for things, so it's gonna help a lot."

Washington state currently has the highest minimum wage at $9.32 an hour.
