Three Central Coast boys basketball teams play CIF State Tournament openers Wednesday night. Arroyo Grande and St. Joseph play on the road after receiving at-large berths, while Mission Prep opens at home.
22-9 Arroyo Grande, the 13th seed in the Southern California Division II Regional, plays at fourth seeded Westlake. The Warriors are 26-5 and lost to Redondo Union in the Division 2A title game last weekend. Redondo Union eliminated AG in the semifinals. Westlake averages 78 points per game and is led by guards Grant Lozoya (17.6 points) and Larry Bush (14.6). Westlake is 10-0 at home this season. Arroyo Grande made it to the second round of the Division III State Tournament last year.
22-8 St. Joseph earned an at-large berth after losing in the Division 4A semifinals to Brentwood. The Knights are the 14th seed in the Division 4 Southern California Regional. They open at 3rd seeded Exeter. The 23-6 Monarchs are the Division 4 Central Section champions. Eli Garver leads the team with 11 points per game, while junior center Caleb Harden averages 10 points and 7 rebounds. Case Bruton leads the Knights in scoring at 21 points per game. Juniors Curry Parham (11 points, 7 rebounds, 2 blocks) and Keith Datu (13 points, 9 rebounds, 3 blocks) provide inside scoring depth for St. Joseph, which is making its first State Tournament appearance since 2004.
The Mission Prep Royals earned the #3 seed in Division V after a runner-up finish in Division 5AA. The 23-8 Royals will open at home against 11-18 Laton looking to put last weekend's loss to Buckley behind them. Quinton Adlesh led the Royals with 25 points in their 54-46 loss in the championship. Junior Alves Branson is Laton's leading scorer at 10 points and 10 rebounds per game. Mission lost in the second round of the State Tournament to eventual state champion Village Christian.
The first round winners advance to Saturday's Regional Semifinals.
