The Mission Prep basketball team lost in the CIF-SS Division 5AA championship game on Saturday. Buckley beat the Royals, 54-46 in the title game played at Mater Dei High School in Santa Ana. Mission Prep drops to 23-8 while the Griffins improve to 24-6. The Royals will still advance to the State Tournament because they made the CIF-SS championship game.
Mission Prep fought out of an eight point hole in the second quarter to tie the game at 23 going into halftime. Sophomore guard Quinton Adlesh and senior forward Connor Woolpert scored 21 of the Royals 23 points in the first half. Adlesh had 12 points in the first 16 minutes including a halfcourt bank shot at the end of the first quarter.
Buckley started the third quarter with a 13-2 run to take a 36-25 lead. Adlesh led Mission Prep back by scoring the teams next 11 points. The Royals tied it and the game went into the fourth quarter, 40-40.
The Griffins got a big shot from Tyler Coppin-Carter with four minutes to go. Up by two points, Coppin-Carter fired a desperation fade away three-pointer to beat the shot clock horn. It went in to give Buckley a five point advantage. The Griffins made free throws down the stretch to secure the eight point win.
Adlesh had a game-high 24 points, he was 5-15 on three pointers. Woolpert was held to 2 points in the second half and finished with 11 total. Senior Andy Rowley and junior Patrick Laird added 4 points for the Royals.
Mission Prep will find out where it will play in the State Tournament on Sunday.
