Michael Cardwell is the second Mission Prep football player in this year's class to verbally commit to play at the next level. The 5-7, 155 pound running back verbally committed recently to the Missouri University of Science and Technology. Cardwell said he picked the school because not only can he play football there, but it also has a prominent aerospace engineering program.
The Miners are a Division II program located in Rolla, Missouri. The Miners finished the 2012 season 10-1 and ranked 24th in the final American Football Coaches Association Poll of the season. It marked just the second time in program history the team finished the season as a ranked team. The Miners were one of just seven Division II programs in the nation to finish the season with one loss.
Cardwell was instrumental in the Royals' runner-up finish in CIF and 11-2 campaign. Cardwell rushed for 1,370 yards on 172 carries with 14 rushing touchdowns. He averaged 7.97 yards per carry. He also racked up more than 500 return yards on kicks and punts and returned 3 kicks for touchdowns.
David Brown is the Miners head coach and he has several ties to the Central Coast. He is a 1996 Cal Poly graduate and also was a defensive backs coach at Allan Hancock College. Brown played on the Mustangs with Mission Prep head coach Chad Henry.
Earlier this month, Mission's Andrew DeSesa committed to Brown.
