A Monterey driver is recovering after colliding with a big rig and another car near Paso Robles yesterday.
The collision happened around 6:30 a.m. Wednesday at the intersection of Highway 101 and Welsona.
CHP officers say the big rig was crossing the highway into the northbound lanes, when it was hit by a pickup truck and a sedan traveling south.
The driver of the pickup, Thomas Thein from Monterey, had to be pulled from the truck. He suffered major injuries and was taken to the hospital for treatment.
Investigators believe a right of way violation and foggy weather conditions were to blame. "The conditions at the time were very foggy... and we're asking drivers out there on the Central Coast when it is foggy to slow down and obey all traffic laws," said Sgt. Dan Hart of the CHP.
The four people in the car, Norgerto Anaya, Maria Fernandez, Luis Fernandez and G. Fernandez, who were all from Salinas, were not hurt. The driver of the big rig, Bobby Fortner from Lewiston, Idaho also escaped injury.
