United States Defense Secretary Robert Gates retires Thursday, after running two wars for two different presidents.
Gates will be replaced by CIA Director Leon Panetta, a former U.S. Congressman who served a portion of San Luis Obispo County from 1977-1993. Panetta also headed the Budget Committee and was director of the Office of Management and Budget. He is a native of Monterey.
One of Panetta's first tasks will be slicing the military's budget. He is also likely to implement the new policy to let gays serve openly in the military and handling the Libyan conflict.
