Monument recognizes 30th Space Wing

A tribute to our veterans is growing in Santa Maria. The Freedom Monument Veterans Memorial received a new addition recognizing the contributions of Vandenberg Air Force Base and its 30th Space Wing.

The new monument was dedicated during a ceremony Friday in front of the Abel Maldonado Youth Center.

The Freedom Monument honors all local veterans. It includes the names of 97 Santa Maria veterans who died in conflicts from World War II through the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The Santa Maria Valley Chamber of Commerce designed and built the Freedom Monument. Since its dedication in 2001, plaques and memorials have been added each year on December 7.
