Nolan Moore's first goal of the season in the 26th minute proved to be the game-winner in the Cal Poly men's soccer team's 1-0 win in a Big West Conference game over UC Davis on Tuesday night at Alex G. Spanos Stadium.
Cal Poly junior midfielder George Malki fired in a shot that was stopped, but not hauled in by UC Davis keeper Omar Zeenni. Moore, a junior midfielder, raced to the loose ball and pounded his shot to the back of the net.
Freshman goalkeeper Wade Hamilton recorded 4 saves in goal to preserve the shutout for the Mustangs, the first in his collegiate career. The Mustangs improved to 3-2-1 in conference and 8-5-1 overall. The Mustangs kept pace with rival UCSB, the Gauchos blanked first place Sacramento State 2-0 on Tuesday to remain in a tie for third place with Cal Poly.
Sacramento State is 4-1-1 in conference with 13 points. UC Davis fell to 4-2-0 in second place with 12 points. The Mustangs and Gauchos are tied for third with 10 points headed into Friday's Blue-Green Rivalry game at Harder Stadium. The match will be televised live on Fox Soccer Channel at 8pm.
The Aggies outshot the Mustangs 15-9. They took 11 shots in the second half, including one in the 58th minute from Josh Joslin that hit off the cross bar and bounced away.
Atascadero High graduate Alex Aguiar, a junior midfielder for the Aggies, fired off 2 shots, including a header that was hauled in by Hamilton in the second half.
