For many adults today, creating a home of their own may be more difficult.
A U.S. Census report out Wednesday says more adults are moving in with family members or seeking roommates.
In fact, more than two million more households are shared now than in 2007.
Locally, some adults are finding the Central Coast too expensive for those trying to make it on their own.
Rooming with friends or family seems to be their best option.
Stephanie Murawski lives in a three bedroom, three bathroom home in a quiet San Luis Obispo neighborhood.
"When I first moved here I was paying like close to $900 a month for rent. And now, I pay like $600," she said.
It's a home this 27 year-old can't afford alone.
"I posted a room on Craigslist," she said. "We have some people coming over today that are going to look at the room."
More people between the ages of 25 and 34 are sharing homes now than in 2007.
Stephanie's home is one of 10 million shared by that age group.
"Living with roommates is allowing me to have a new car and do my own thing and have money."
She says it's especially difficult on the Central Coast to start a career.
"It's hard to live here and make a lot of money, you know, and if you want to buy a house here, they're so expensive."
Even with money in savings, Stephanie needs job security. If she can't make it here, she says, she can't stay.
"If I were to lose my job, I would probably move home. I would move back to Michigan and live with myparents and find a job there."
Another study from Pew Research found that moving back home is also trending across the country.
Those results show more than two in 10 people are living in a multigenerational household. They're being called the "boomerang generation" because they're coming back to live with family.
