Zach Smith and Xavier Alfaro combined for 35 points to lead the Morro Bay High boys basketball team to a 62-58 season opening win over Archbishop Carney on the opening day of its 34th annual Harding Invitational Tournament.
Led by new head coach Mike Godsey, the host Pirates scored the first 12 points of the game, before the team from British Columbia made it a one point game after the first quarter.
Smith finished with 17 points, while Alfaro poured in a team-high 18 points.
The Pirates return to action on Friday at 3pm against North Bakersfield. The H.I.T. runs through Saturday.
Also on Thursday, the Arroyo Grande High boys opened their season with a 61-48 win over Moorpark. Brennan Rivera led the defending Pac 7 champion Eagles with 19 points, while Matt Willkomm poured in 15 points and Carson Wack added 11 points. AG hit nine three-pointers, Willkomm and Wack had 3 apiece, while Rivera hit two.
