The Morro Bay High boys volleyball team clinched the program's first-ever outright Los Padres League title on Thursday night with a 3-0 win over visiting Nipomo. The Pirates won 25-21, 25-29 and 25-21 to stay undefeated in league matches.
The Pirates improved to 7-0 in LPL play and 12-0 overall in non-tournament matches. More importantly, they will be able to fill in the empty boys volleyball banner on the gymnasium wall. Every Morro Bay sport has a banner on the wall that includes the year or years it wins a league crown.
"Our first title, we're going to get our year up there and that's huge. The first number on the wall. We're so excited," said Carson Szarek, who led the Pirates with 35 digs.
Morro Bay officially snapped the streak of Santa Ynez, which had won 19-straight LPL titles. The Pirates swept Santa Ynez this season handing the perennial powerhouse just its second and third league losses in the last 19 years.
"It's the first time that Morro Bay boys volleyball has won an LPL championship for boys volleyball. That was our goal and we accomplished it all by ourselves and we took down the big, bad Santa Ynez," added head coach James Bueno.
Several Pirates enjoyed big nights. Edward Griley led the Pirates with 21 kills and 12 blocks, Marcus Zorovich dished out 45 assists, Scott Milligan tallied 15 kills, while Bryce Owens collected 9 kills and 10 blocks.
