The Morro Bay girls basketball team had a tough draw in the Division 4AA quarterfinals. The Pirates lost at home to undefeated Windward, 71-23. The Wildcats are a private school from Los Angeles ranked number two in the state and number three in the nation by Max Preps.
Windward jumped out to an 18-3 lead in the first quarter with suffocating pressure defense and a number of second chance opportunities on offense. The Wildcats lead stretched to 38-10 by halftime.
Sophomore guard Emily Surloff led all scorers with 20 points, junior point guard Jordin Canada added 17 points while junior post Kristen Simon had 16 points and 13 rebounds. Windward advances to the semifinals with a 28-0 record.
Morro Bay was led in scoring by junior guard Sierra Schwellenbach with 9 points. Senior post Hannah Gilbert added 6 points. Gilbert, who will play at Cal Poly next season was one of six Pirate seniors. The senior class was a part of three straight Los Padres League championship teams. Morro Bay finishes 22-4.
