Morro Bay senior to be Hannah Gilbert has verbally committed to play basketball at Cal Poly next year. Gilbert averaged 14-points, 11-rebounds, 2-blocks and 2-steals per game as a junior while leading the Pirates to a 20-4 record.
Gilbert says Cal Poly offered everything she was looking for academically and athletically. The 6'3" post wanted to make her college decision before the high school season started. "I didn't want to be worrying about what my stats were every game" said Gilbert.
Gilbert is the Pirates starting center and most of her offense came on finishes close to the basket but she did make two of nine three pointers and shot 73% from the free throw line. She says she's been working on improving her shot this offseason.
Morro Bay returns all of its players from the team that went 12-0 in the Los Padres League last season.
A verbal commitment does not bind Gilbert to sign with the Mustangs nor does it guarantee her a scholarship with Cal Poly.
Cal Poly head coach Faith Mimnaugh can't comment on a player who has yet to sign a scholarship but Mimnaugh did announce the signing of Taryn Garza on Friday. Garza will transfer to Cal Poly from Modesto College where she competed in track and field last year. Prior to enrolling at Modesto College she played basketball at the University of Pacific.
Mimnaugh says Garza is a player that can play full court defense and allow the Mustangs to press more than they did last season.
In addition to Garza the Mustangs also added Maddison Allen (6-3, post) from Biggera Waters, Australia, Taylor Spears (5-8, guard) from Brea, California and Caroline Hughes (6-1, guard/forward) from Pleasanton, California.
