Morro Bay surfer captures "killer" pictures of Killer Whales

Sometimes you are in the right place at the right time. Sometimes you have to make that happen, and Mike Jones of Morro bay tends to do that now and then.

Yesterday when word started to make its way through Morro Bay that some Killer Whales were off the harbor less than a half-mile, Jones closed up his business "Azhiaziam Surf and Clothing Shop" on the Embarcadero. With camera gear in hand, he headed to the harbor and started working to get a boat to take him out and see the action up close.

Jones says he was roughly a half-mile away from Morro Rock when he saw a pack of as many as 20 Orcas and two other types of whales...a mother and a calf. Other witnesses say they were Gray Whales. He says the Orcas appeared to be herding the baby away from the mother. "It was sad." said Jones.

Jones captured some amazing shots, though, of a scene that doesn't happen very often: Killer Whales spending any time this close to Central Coast shores.
