Morro Bay's Shipe chases down CIF title

After running nearly three miles, Morro Bay High senior James Shipe won a CIF-Southern Section cross country title by two seconds.

Shipe won the Division IV boy's race with a time of 15:21, two seconds ahead of the second place finisher. Nipomo High's Andrew Garcia finished third at 15:40, 19 seconds back of Shipe.

Thanks in part to Shipe's win, the Morro Bay boys finished fourth in the team standings and advanced to the CIF state meet. The meet was held at Mount San Antonio College Saturday morning.

Arroyo Grande's Hugo Gutierrez finished 18th in the Division II race. He finished in 15:38, 67 seconds back of the winner.

The Arroyo Grande and San Luis Obispo girl's teams finished eighth in their respective divisions. The Tigers were led by Kathleen Uyttewaal, who finished 19th in 18 minutes, 36 seconds. Atascadero's Mimi Peterson finished 21st, four seconds after Uyttewaal in the Division III race. Arroyo Grande's Hannah Stevens came in 29th in the Division II girl's race.

In the Division IV girl's race, the Templeton girls finished fifth in the overall team standings and advanced to the CIF state meet. The Eagles were led by sophomore Savannah Camacho, who finished 13th with a time of 19:01. St.Joseph's Quetta Peinado finished 8th in the same race.
