The California Highway Patrol says a mother and her 19-year-old son were arrested and the woman's two other children were taken into protective custody after an incident of highway violence south of Paso Robles Friday morning.
According to the CHP, Irene Martinez, 39, of Paso Robles was speeding and driving under the influence on southbound Highway 101 at about 8:30 a.m. when she cut off another vehicle driven by Randall Griffin. Martinez and Griffin got off the highway at State Route 46 and stopped at the light. The CHP says Griffin got out of his car and a verbal confrontation ensued between Griffin, Martinez and her 19-year-old son, Drake Anaya. The CHP says Martinez and Anaya got out of their car to confront Griffin and that threats were exchanged. That's when the CHP says Griffin got back in his car and tried to leave, but was punched by Martinez through an open window and could not get his car back into gear.
The CHP says Anaya got a baseball bat from his mother's car and began to strike Griffin's car with it, breaking several windows and causing glass to strike Griffin's three-year-old passenger in the back seat. The Child's mother was in the front passenger seat and was not hurt.
Martinez's two children, ages 7 and 8, remained in their car seats and were not hurt.
Police arrived and arrested Martinez and her 19-year-old son. Martinez was booked into jail on charges of driving under the influence, child endangerment, and battery. Anaya was booked on charges of assault with a deadly weapon, vandalism, and child endangerment.
No charges were filed against Griffin. He and his young passenger declined medical treatment at the scene.
San Luis Obispo County Child Protective Services responded to the CHP office and took custody of Martinez's two children.
