Mothers for Peace files paperwork opposing Diablo Canyon relicensing

A local organization has filed formal paperwork with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission in opposition to the license renewal of the Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant.

San Luis Obispo Mothers for Peace (SLOMFP) says its attorney filed the paperwork on their behalf on Monday. The groups says now the NRC must provide written justifications of why it plans to renew the power plant's license. SLOMFP says if the NRC does not provide that information, then it opens itself up to being challenged on its decision in federal court.

The NRC has hosted two public meetings on the re-licensing of the Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant this month. Pacific Gas and Energy, the company which owns Diablo Canyon, filed for an extension on its license in November 2009. That extension would last the plant until 2045.

One of the main areas of concern is seismic safety at the plant.
