Multiple pregnancies may be tied to increased heart risk

Giving birth at least four times may be associated with early signs of heart problems in women.

Researchers at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center analyzed coronary artery calcium data on more than 1,500 women. Compared to women who had two or three pregnancies, those who'd had at least four babies showed more evidence of plaque in their heart or thickening of their arteries.

Doctors caution they are not recommending women do any family planning based on this study. They say research like this may help doctors estimate a woman's future risk of cardiovascular disease.
