Already ranked #12 in the FCS Preseason Coaches Poll, the Cal Poly football team received a #14 ranking on Tuesday in The Sports Network Preseason Poll.
The poll of national sports information and media relations directors, as well as broadcasters and writers, voted the two-time defending national champion North Dakota State Bison the clear number 1. The Bison received 127 of the 134 first place votes.
Montana State, which went 11-2 last season and finished in a three-way tie for first in the Big Sky Conference with Cal Poly and Eastern Washington, was tabbed #2 in the nation. Sam Houston State, the national runner-up the last two season and the team that beat Cal Poly in the second round of the playoffs last season, is the preseason #3. Eastern Washington is ranked #4, followed by Villanova at #5.
The Mustangs received 1,646 total points in the poll. Fellow Big Sky member Northern Arizona was tabbed 18th and Montana came in 20th.
Cal Poly is coming off a 9-3 campaign that included a share of the Big Sky title and second round berth in the FCS playoffs.
The Mustangs open the season August 31 at home against the University of San Diego.
