The Cal Poly men's tennis team is preparing to make school history later this week. The Mustangs are gunning for their first Big West Conference Tournament championship.
First year head coach Nick Carless and the Mustangs won the program's third big west regular season title over the weekend. They are the third team in conference history to go undefeated in conference.
Arroyo Grande High graduate Andre Dome, who's ranked 40th in the nation in singles, is a big reason for Cal Poly's success. The junior says his team is in better shape this year headed down to the tournament in Indian Wells. "It always comes down to fitness. Down in Palm Springs it's going to be in the high 90's over there. So it's going to be tough conditions. But I think we are mentally and physically ready for it," said Dome.
The Mustangs, who are the number one seed, believe they have the depth and talent to take the tournament after runner-up finishes in 2007 and 2010. "We've had two goals all year long. Number one goal was to win the regular season and the biggest goal was to win the tournament so we can get the automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament. It's right there in front of us. Now we just need to go out and play our best tennis of the season and I think that we can do it," said coach Carless.
As the top seed, the Mustangs earned a first round bye. They play the winner of Pacific and UC Davis in the semifinals on Saturday. The championship round is Saturday.
