Cal Poly senior quarterback Andrew Broadous has been named the Big Sky Conference Player of the week after the Mustangs' season-opening win.
Broadous ran for two touchdowns, passed for two more and surpassed the 100-yard mark both rushing and passing, to earn the initial Root Sports Big Sky Conference Offensive Player of the Week for the 2012 season.
Broadous cracked the 100-yard mark in rushing for the second time in his Cal Poly career as the Mustangs defeated San Diego 41-14 Saturday afternoon in Alex G. Spanos Stadium. His other career 100-yard game was a 103-yard effort against Northern Illinois a year ago.
Broadous rushed for 113 yards on just 15 carries, averaging 7.5 yards per trip, and completed 12 of 19 passes for 135 yards as Cal Poly beat San Diego in just the second meeting between the two California schools. The Mustangs earned a 36-14 victory over the Toreros in 1959, also in San Luis Obispo.
Broadous hit Akaninyene Umoh with a seven-yard scoring pass and connected with Deonte Williams on a 12-yarder, both in the fourth quarter, as the Mustangs scored the final 21 points of the game to pull away.
Broadous ran a career-long 56 yards for a touchdown in the third period and added a five-yard run in the final quarter.
Root Sports, the official TV partner of the Big Sky Conference, will televise 12 conference games in 2012. Its first telecast on Sept. 22 features Northern Arizona taking on nationally-ranked Montana.
Cal Poly football has a bye this week, returning to action Sept. 15 at Wyoming.
