Alex Michaels and Mitch Haniger had three hits apiece to lead a 15-hit attack for the Mustangs in their 6-2 non-conference win at Cal State Bakersfield Tuesday night.
Cal Poly improved to 30-20 on the season after taking three of four from the Roadrunners in the last five days. Cal State Bakersfield fell to 20-26.
Haniger put the Mustangs on the board in the first inning with a basehit to rightfield to score Tim Wise, who had tripled. It marked the 26th consecutive game Wise had reached base safety.
The Roadrunners scored 2 in the third inning to take a 2-1 lead. Michaels tied it 2-2 with a home run to lead off the fourth inning. Jimmy Allen gave Cal Poly a 3-2 lead in the fifth with a triple to score Mike Miller, who had singled earlier in the inning. Miller later singled home Chris Hoo in the sixth inning to give the Mustangs a 4-2 lead.
The Mustangs added two runs in the seventh. Jimmy Allen doubled and came around to score on a double by Michaels. David Armendariz drove in Michaels later in the frame with a suicide squeeze bunt.
Nick Grim earned the win to improve to 3-2 on the season. He pitched 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief of starter Bryan Granger. Michael Holback and Chase Johnson each threw 2 scoreless innings to close out the victory.
Allen, Hoo and Miller each recorded 2 hits apiece.
Cal Poly returns to Baggett Stadium to close out the home portion of its schedule this weekend. The Mustangs open a Big West series with rival UCSB Friday night at 6pm. Cal Poly is in fourth place, while the Gauchos are in sixth place. UCSB beat the Mustangs in a non-conference game at UCSB earlier this season. .
