STANFORD, Calif. - The Cal Poly volleyball team lost to No. 8 Stanford in three sets Wednesday night in Stanford by set scores of 25-12, 25-10 and 25-19. With the loss the Mustangs fall to 4-6 overall while Stanford improves to 6-3.
Cal Poly returns to action at the Arizona State Tournament when they take on the host Sun Devils on Friday, Sept. 20.
Senior Megan McConnell led the team with 11 kills on 30 swings. She added five digs and one assist in the match. Fellow senior Chelsea Hardin adding six kills with true freshman Taylor Gruenwald had two kills.
Cal Poly hit just .054 in the match while Stanford hit a hot .453. Stanford was led by Inky Ajanaku and Jordan Burgess with eighth kills each with Carly Wopat and Brittany Howard adding six kills each.
Stanford held the edge in aces, 8-4, and had seven more digs (36-29), and outblocked the Mustangs 11-1.
The No. 8 Cardinal moved out to a 5-1 lead when the Mustangs responded with a 3-1 run behind a kills by McConnell to cut the lead to 5-4. Stanford expanded the lead to 11-5 in the first set, forcing a Cal Poly timeout. Stanford expanded the lead to 17-8 with the Mustangs calling a second timeout. Stanford went on to win the first set, 25-12, with Cal Poly hitting a -.031 and Stanford hitting . 519.
Stanford opened the second set , 5-0, before Cal Poly score on a kill by McConnell. The Cardinal expanded their lead to 12-5 when the Mustangs called a timeout. Stanford expanded the lead to 17-6 with the Mustangs calling their second timeout. Stanford went on to win the set, 25-10.
In the third set, Cal Poly grabbed an early 4-3 lead on a kill by Schleis and built a 6-4 on a kill by Hardin. The Mustangs maintained an 8-6 lead on a kill by Hardin, but Stanford went on a 6-0 run to hold a 12-8 lead. Stanford went on to pull away for a 25-19 win.
