A 38-16 win against San Diego propelled the Cal Poly football team up one spot in the FCS Coaches Poll and two positions in the Sports Network Media Poll. The Mustangs are now ranked 10th by the coaches and 12th by the media.
Cal Poly plays at FBS level Fresno State on Saturday night. Eight FCS teams upset FBS programs during the opening week of games. The highest profile upsets were North Dakota State winning 24-21 at Kansas State and Eastern Washington winning 49-46 at Oregon State.
Both polls have North Dakota State ranked number 1, the Bison are the two time defending champions. The Coaches and Media also agree that Eastern Washington, Montana State and Sam Houston State are the next three ranked teams. The Coaches picked Central Arkansas at Number 5 while the Media voted Towson 5th.
Besides Eastern Washington, Montana State and Cal Poly, two other Big Sky teams are in the polls this week. Montana is ranked 13th in the Media Poll and 18th in the Coaches Poll while Northern Arizona is ranked 22nd and 24th.
In the preseason Jeff Sagarin ratings published by USA Today, Cal Poly was listed 118th among all 252 NCAA Division I football programs and 15th among the 127 FCS schools. The Mustangs were ranked ahead of such FBS members as Hawai'i, Memphis, UNLV, Colorado State, Tulane, New Mexico, Akron, New Mexico State, Massachusetts and Idaho.
