Mustangs no match for Eastern Washington

Cal Poly fell behind 35-3 before rallying to get within 13 points against Eastern Washington. The third ranked Eagles won at Spanos Stadium, 35-22 to improve to 7-0 in the Big Sky Conference and 9-2 overall. The Mustangs drop to 4-3, 5-6. Cal Poly finishes the season at Northern Colorado (1-10) next Saturday.

Dual threat sophomore quarterback Vernon Adams passed for 224 yards and a pair of touchdowns for the Eagles before leaving the game early in the third quarter after taking a hit.

Anthony Vitto replaced the injured Adams and connected on eight of 12 passes for 127 yards and a touchdown as Eastern Washington threw for 351 yards. The 2010 National Champions clinch at least a share of a second straight Big Sky title.

Cal Poly sophomore quarterback Dano Graves threw three interceptions before being replaced by sophomore Chris Brown in the fourth quarter. Trailing 35-3, Cal Poly rallied for three touchdowns on runs by Brandon Howe and Brown and a 25-yard scoring pass from Brown to Cole Stanford.

The last score came with 3:07 remaining in the game. Eastern Washington recovered the onside kick and turned the ball over on downs with 52 seconds left, Cal Poly drove to the Eastern Washington 17-yard line before time ran out.

Junior slotback Kristaan Ivory went over 1,000 yards rushing for the season with 14 carries for 88 yards. Ivory is the 16th Cal Poly player to go over the 1,000 yard mark.

Graves completed eight of 16 passes for 37 yards while rushing for 75 yards on 16 rushes. Brown completed four of seven passes for 87 yards and ran five times for 63 yards.

Cal Poly got on the board first with a 22-yard Bobby Zalud field goal set up by a 51 yard kick-off return by Chris Nicholls. The Mustang defense kept the high powered Eastern Washington offense scoreless until Quincy Forte ran 37 yards for a score six minutes into the second quarter. With 1:14 to go in the first half, Adams connected with Cooper Kupp for a 32-yard touchdown as the Eagles took a 14-3 lead into halftime.

Eastern Washington scored three more touchdowns in the third quarter to take a 32 point lead. Adams hit Kupp for a 24-yard scoring pass, Vitto connected with Shaquille Hill on a 54-yard touchdown pass and Mario Brown ran 34 yards for a score.

The Cal Poly defense had given up an average of 12 points and 272 yards in its last five games. The Mustangs allowed 486 yards to Eastern Washington.

Cal Poly's 437 total yards include 313 on the ground and 124 through the air.
