The Cal Poly baseball team is tied for first place in the Big West and the third ranked team in the nation so it's no surprise there have been plenty of Mustangs earning weekly awards. Cal Poly swept the Big West awards for last week as Mark Mathias was named the conferences Field Player of the Week and Reed Reilly was awarded the Pitcher of the Week honor.
The Mustangs went 4-0 for the week helped by Mathias' .412 batting average from the leadoff spot. The sophomore second baseman had three multi-hit games and three of his seven hits went for doubles as Cal Poly defeated Saint Mary's in a non-conference game and swept Hawai'i on the road. For the week, Mathias had a .500 on-base percentage and .588 slugging percentage. Mathias has hit in 24 of his last 25 games. His batting average is now .379 for the season.
Reilly notched a save in a pair of one-run victories at Hawai‘i. The 6'4" right-hander posted a three-inning save, his sixth of the year, Friday in a 3-2 series-opening victory. He retired all nine Hawai'i batters, including four by strikeout.
Reilly picked up his seventh save in Saturday's 4-3 win over the Rainbow Warriors. Reilly entered the game with runners at the corners in the bottom of the ninth, and battled Juliene Jones for nine pitches before striking him out. Reilly also threw one scoreless inning with a pair of strikeouts in a non-conference win against Saint Mary's on Tuesday.
In 4 1/3 innings spanning three appearances, Reilly faced one batter over the minimum and recorded seven strikeouts. For the season, Reilly is 1-1 with a 1.42 ERA and 30 strikeouts in 25 1/3 innings.
Cal Poly is 30-5 for the season and 8-1 in the Big West. The Mustangs will take a six game winning streak with them to Bakersfield on Tuesday night before returning home to host Cal State Fullerton in a key Big West Conference series Thursday through Saturday in Baggett Stadium.
