The Cal Poly football team won it's Big Sky opener, ending a three game losing streak to UC-Davis in the process. Senior slotback Deonte Williams scored three touchdowns as the Mustangs beat the Aggies 28-20 in Spanos Stadium.
UC-Davis jumped out to a 10-0 lead mid way through the first quarter. Akinyene Umoh scored on a 51 yard touchdown run late in the first quarter for Cal Poly to make it 10-7. On third and goal from the five yard line in the second quarter, Williams scored on a pitch play to put the Mustangs ahead 14-10. Despite missed field goals from kicker Bobby Zalud of 28 and 30 yards, Cal Poly went to the half up 14-10.
Williams scored on touchdown runs of 14 and seven in the third quarter and the Mustangs took a 28-10 lead into the fourth quarter.
The Aggies responded with a touchdown early in the fourth and then kicked a 41 yard field goal with 5:45 to play that pulled them within 28-20. UC-Davis got it back with 2:35 to play and no timeouts, Cal Poly forced a turnover on downs to secure the win.
Williams finished with 188 yards rushing on 20 carries.
Next week Cal Poly plays at the University of North Dakota in another Big Sky Conference game. UND is 3-1.
