The Cal Poly football team won it's Big Sky opener, ending a three game losing streak to UC-Davis in the process. Senior slotback Deonte Williams scored three touchdowns as the Mustangs beat the Aggies 28-20 in Spanos Stadium.
UC-Davis jumped out to a 10-0 lead mid way through the first quarter. Akinyene Umoh scored on a 51 yard touchdown run late in the first quarter for Cal Poly to make it 10-7. On third and goal from the five yard line in the second quarter, Williams scored on a pitch play to put the Mustangs ahead 14-10. Despite missed field goals from kicker Bobby Zalud of 28 and 30 yards, Cal Poly went to the half up 14-10.
Williams scored on touchdown runs of 14 and seven in the third quarter and the Mustangs took a 28-10 lead into the fourth quarter.
The Aggies responded with a touchdown early in the fourth and then kicked a 41 yard field goal with 5:45 to play that pulled them within 28-20. UC-Davis got it back with 2:35 to play and no timeouts, Cal Poly forced a turnover on downs to secure the win.
Williams finished with 188 yards rushing on 20 carries.
