The Cal Poly football team turned a narrow six point lead at the end of the third quarter into a 27 point blowout win in its season opener against the University of San Diego. Senior quarterback Andre Broadous ran for two touchdowns and threw for two more as the Mustangs beat the Toreros, 41-14 at Spanos Stadium in the first game for both teams.
Cal Poly jumped out to a 10-0 lead by the time the first quarter had ended but USD closed the gap to 13-7 by halftime.
On the opening drive of the second half, Broadous broke a quarterback keeper for a 56 yard touchdown run. Broadous added another touchdown run in the fourth quarter and racked up 113 rushing yards on 15 carries.
Broadous was also 12-19 passing for 135 yards. His first touchdown pass was a seven yarder to full back Akaninyene Umoh early in the fourth quarter to put the Mustangs up 27-14. Broadous added a 12 yard touchdown pass to Deonte Williams to cap the scoring midway through the fourth quarter. Williams had two catches for 15 yards. The senior slotback also had 109 yards rushing on 21 carries.
Cal Poly rushed for 323 yards on 62 running playes. Overall the Mustangs outgained the Toreros, 458-240.
Matthew Reza, Alex Hubbard and Johnny Millard all intercepted USD senior quarterback Mason Mills.
Cal Poly's top receiver was sophomore Lance Castaneda with four receptions for 60 yards.
Sophomore linebacker Nick Dzubnar was Cal Poly's leading tackler with nine. Senior cornerback Nick Molino and senior linebacker Kennith Jackson each had six.
Cal Poly turned the ball over once on a fumble while San Diego committed four turnovers.
In his first game as a Mustang, junior Bobby Zalud kicked 26 and 30 yard field goals. The transfer from Arkansas State was perfect on extra points. Zalud also handled punting duties as projected starter Paul Hundley is academically ineligible.
Cal Poly has a bye next week, the Mustangs will play at the University of Wyoming on Sepetember 15.
