The Northern Santa Barbara County Athletic Roundtable named Santa Ynez High's Kat Rocha and Orcutt Academy's Nate DeBruno its Female and Male Athletes of the Week on Monday.
Rocha, a senior tennis star for the Pirates, went a perfect 6-0 last week for the Los Padres League champions. She also went 4-0 in the LPL Tournament overcoming a 1-4 deficit in the final to win 6-4, 6-1 to capture the crown.
"I got frustrated with myself, but decided to calm down and kind of relax and take it one point at a time and work really hard," said Rocha, who added the award was a nice way to be recognized for a tough, long week of tennis.
Santa Ynez hosts a first round CIF playoff match on Wednesday afternoon. The Pirates will play the winner of the Bellflower/La Salle wildcard match set for Tuesday afternoon.
DeBruno, a senior running back, racked up 238 rushing yards on 25 carries and scored 3 touchdowns in the Spartans 63-28 win over Valley Christian Academy last week. It was the first-ever meeting between the two 8-man football programs.
"Our O line pushed them off the ball and that's what made it easy for us. We had some good defense and created some turnovers," said DeBruno, who was quick to credit his entire team for the big win.
Orcutt Academy, in its first year of 8-man football, received an at-large berth to the CIF playoffs. The Spartans will play at Cate on Friday in a Division II first round game.
