Navy pilot from Lompoc killed in helicopter crash

A Navy pilot from Lompoc was killed in a helicopter crash Sunday in the Red Sea. The Department of Defense identified him as Lt. Cmdr. Landon Jones, 35.

Jones and another sailor, Chief Warrant Officer Jonathan Gibson, 32, of Oregon, died when their MH-60S Knighthawk crashed for unknown reasons.

The U.S. Navy says three other crew members were rescued.

According to the Navy Times, Jones was a U.S. Naval Academy graduate who was commissioned in May 2001. He was assigned to Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron Six at Naval Air Station North Island in San Diego.

The cause of the crash is under investigation, but the Navy says no hostile action was involved.
